At least the question should not be regarded as closed, and it may be asked how much difference there is between the two views, (a) that Irenaeus used the Western text, which was subsequently corrected and debased so as to produce for example the text of D. and (b) that Irenaeus used a free type oftext which subsequently formed the basis of the Hauptredaktion that produced the Western text proper. Is it possible that the Western text should be thought of as a process in which a number of points of discontinuity can be observed?
